Functional materials enter more and more fields of application in traffic engineering, communication technology and mechanical engineering.
Large electrical and mechanical loads, usually for a large number of operating cycles or great lengths of time, make high demands on the reliability of the manufactured components.
Especially cyclic electrical loads cause besides reversible currents and polarizations also irreversible currents that ultimately lead to mechanical as well as electrical fatigue.
In the view of these facts the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) has been funding the Sonderforschungsbereich (center of excellence) 595 “Electrical Fatigue in Functional Materials” from January 2003 to December 2014.
The center of excellence focuses on the aspects of
- modelling and
of ferroelectrics, ionic conductors and semiconducting polymers.
